Mauritius

Situated somewhere in the South Western Indian Ocean, the island of Mauritius is about 800 km to the east of Madagascar and is part of the Mascarene Archipelago. The Mascarene Archipelago consists of three islands, Mauritius, Reunion (which is part of France) and Rodrigues. The Republic of Mauritius itself comprises the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues, Saint Brandon, Agalega and the Chagos Archipelago.

Mauritius enjoys a warm but agreeable tropical climate the whole year. During the summer period, from November to April, the average temperature ranges between 23°c to 33°c. While during the winter period, from May to October, the average temperature ranges between 17°c to 23°c. 

Mauritius, also known as the “Star and Key of the Indian Ocean” is the crossroad of different civilizations, culture and people. In fact, its population boasts origins from the European and African continents, as well as from India and China. Despite or because of its most complex ethnic and religious mix and few natural resources, Mauritius achieved to become the only consolidated democracy in southern Africa, the wealthiest state in the region, and has the second highest level of social development.

Mauritius is a democracy modeled on the British system of parliamentary democracy, which guarantees the separation of legislative, executive and judicial powers. Economically, Mauritius is one of very few global countries that continue to exhibit strong GDP growth at around 5-6% per annum. The island boasts a stable and democratic political environment for 40 years. It has a proven track record in terms of political and economic stability, harmonious industrial relations, dynamic private sector and a supportive Government. 

Mauritius develops itself as a financial and investment hub for both private and commercial segments of the international market. The country benefits from its educated workforce also equally fluent in English and French, while many also speak a third international language: Hindi, Mandarin, Urdu and a host of European languages. 

Mauritius has one of the world’s most enabling environment for doing business. The country is ranked 1st in Africa in the Ease of Doing Business Report 2008 from the World Bank. Mauritius is increasingly recognized as a safe and well-regulated jurisdiction from which it is possible to conduct global business.

Significant reforms have been introduced to attract Foreign Direct Investment and foreign talents. Efforts have been made to further ease investment and entrepreneurship. A new business can now be up and operational in just three days. And Mauritius is among the countries with the lowest tax regime in the world. In 2007, a 15% flat corporate income tax and personal income tax were introduced. A total of 32 active Double Taxation Avoidance Treaties (DTAs) also represent potential investment planning opportunities via Mauritius Global Business Companies.
