Transport connections in Mauritius
Transport facilities have been much improved by the Mauritian government. Efforts have been made to make this country more friendly to tourists and its inhabitants. Mauritius does not have railway facilities. However there are several other modes of transportation.
Mauritius has a total of 5 airports (2 paved and 3 unpaved). Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam is the international airport in Mauritius. Major gateway for travelers coming from abroad, it is located in Plaine Magnien. The country is well connected with the rest of the world with the help of a large number of airlines, like British Airways, Air France, Emirates, Aeroflot, Air Zimbabwe, South African Airways, Singapore Airlines, Corsairfly, Lufthansa…and Air Mauritius who operates international and domestic flights.
A good system of roads provides easy access to all parts of the island. There is a trunk road, which runs from the airport in the south east, through Port Louis to Grand Bay in the north. Self-drive cars are easily available. For car-hire, drivers have to be 23 years old and in possession of a valid International Driver's license for a period of one year at least. Cars are right hand driven. Taxis are numerous. They are recognizable by their white registration plates with black figures, whereas private cars have black number plates with white figures. Mauritius boasts an excellent bus service which enables you to reach almost every part of the island.
